Clarinet is an instrument that can be learnt by children from 8 years and adults. The sound of a clarinet is very melodious as it has a soft woody tone that is very pleasing to the ears. It is also a reed instrument and is therefore in the woodwind instrument category.
Learning to play the clarinet initially is quite easy but later becomes a little more challenging when progressing to the higher octave notes.
Christensen’s produce our own clarinet song books with excellent play-along accompaniments which is a real benefit for both beginners and more advanced players alike. Playing clarinet to accompaniment helps the player with rhythm and timing and in particular ‘ear’ development. Also it’s simply more fun to play any wind instrument to music accompaniment.
Children learning clarinet at Christensen’s are taken at their own level with light and easy lessons. Beginner clarinet players first learn embouchure (blowing) technique, and then progress to playing easy songs by ear, scales in a creative way, and later the reading of music. Advancing players are given more challenging material to move them forward with all aspects of their playing. Furthermore music theory is explained thoroughly which is often not the case with learning from many teachers and schools.
Children enjoy learning a musical instrument in small group classes. We take 2 to 3 children maximum in a group class so they still receive individual attention as needed. Most of our learning material is compatible with other instruments so there can be different instruments within the same class. This is great for building a child’s confidence and general musicianship skills. Individual clarinet tuition is also available for children if required. Children’s lessons are all term based.
Note: If your child is under 8 years they would be too young to learn a wind or brass instrument. For this age bracket we recommend Music Discovery, Guitar, Ukulele, Keyboard, Violin.

Adults like the challenge of learning a musical instrument but also they like to go at their own pace. We make learning the clarinet challenging but easy and free of any pressure, which is how learning music needs to be. From beginner players to clarinetists who want to move to the next level, we cater for all. Term or casual lessons can be arranged to suit your circumstances.
Clarinet rental is available for students enrolled for ‘in-person’ lessons on a term basis. If you would prefer to buy a clarinet we also sell instruments and can give you valuable guidance with your purchase. We can obtain good quality clarinets direct from reputable suppliers. For beginners however renting is usually the better option initially.
Clarinet Rental Cost is $11 p/week. All rental is payable in advance by the term or term’s remainder.
